Trump asked about Texas travel following Paxton comments
Description: President Trump was asked Thursday why he was traveling to Texas to highlight manufacturing and the economy despite U.S. Senate candidate Ken Paxton (R) saying the GOP midterm convention in Dallas hurt his polling numbers.
"If Ken Paxton is telling people behind closed doors he thinks the convention hurt his poll numbers, why go to Texas?" Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy asked him.
"Well, I'll tell you why: We have to win this election. You were there, that convention was a tremendous success," the president replied. "First of all, I won Texas all three times, the Hispanic vote all three times. Texas has been great to me."
The New York Times recently published a leaked audio recording of Mr. Paxton saying that the midterm convention hurt him more than it helped.
"To be honest with you, the numbers — when we did that convention — it dropped our numbers," he said at a fundraiser. "Everybody's numbers dropped. Right now, yeah, not good."
President Trump also repeated his claim that the GOP midterm convention beat the NFL in ratings.
"It went up against the NFL. And as you know, they had 24 — I guess it was — I said 25 yesterday, they had 24 million views, and we had 107 million views," he said.
Available Nielsen ratings show the two NFL games drew substantially larger audiences than the convention broadcasts.
The first night of the convention drew roughly 3 million viewers across Fox News, Newsmax and NewsNation, while the Patriots-Seahawks game on NBC and Peacock drew 25.1 million viewers.
The second night drew roughly 3 million viewers across the three networks, while the 49ers-Rams game on Netflix averaged 18.5 million U.S. viewers.
