Three years ago Pope Francis made him a cardinal and now he is Pope

Description: Three years ago, on September 30, 2023, Pope Francis bestowed the cardinal’s biretta upon Robert Francis Prevost, then Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops. Their greeting, filled with joy and affection, is captured in these images.

On May 8, 2025, Prevost would be elected Pope, taking the name Leo XIV. Looking back at that moment today is even more moving. ❤️ Close description
