"Project Unlearn : Rethinking Education" | Eleena George | TEDxJIM Indore
Description: What does it look like when a classroom is in a beehive?
Eleena George, a teacher, an educator, speaks about her experiences of working with inmates in prison to Project Unlearn in her TEDxJIMIndore speech. Her speech asks one to put aside their preconceived notions about an individual and to ask himself whether making an error to shape the rest of his existence is an honest means of determining his character? A class in the prison was the source for powerful insights into the transforming possibilities of education, empathy and opportunity to begin again, as Eleena reflects. She calls attention to the importance of offering second chances, not as a do-over but as a chance to learn and grow and rebuild. Her point of view suggests new definitions and reimagining of classroom; of punishment; of post-punishment; of human potential; and sometimes, of the most important lessons being learned in the most unconventional of classrooms. Eleena George is a social entrepreneur and advocate for social justice with around 10 years of experience working within the criminal justice system. She holds a Master’s degree in Sociology from Ambedkar University. Her work spans education, gender equity, and tribal rights, reflecting her deep commitment to building more inclusive and equitable systems.
She also leads a program focused on setting up prison schools across India, working to expand access to education and create opportunities for rehabilitation within the prison system.
Recognised for her leadership and innovation, Eleena has been awarded several prestigious fellowships, including the Second Chance Fellowship, School for Social Entrepreneurs, Changelooms, UnLtd India, and the Ashoka Fellowship. Through her work, she continues to reimagine justice by centering rehabilitation, dignity, and equal opportunity. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Close description
