'FULLY Dead' Doordarshan Channel is Reviving Via D2M Tech! Indian Tech Guys Should Know #shorts
Description: Prasar Bharati is preparing the next step towards Direct-to-Mobile, or D2M, broadcasting, a technology designed to deliver television content directly to compatible mobile phones without an internet connection.
Chief Executive Officer Gaurav Dwivedi has said the broadcaster is preparing a Request for Proposals, expected by the end of October 2026. This would invite partners for the proposed commercial rollout; it does not mean nationwide services will begin this month.
D2M uses terrestrial broadcasting infrastructure to transmit video, audio and data to supported devices. Viewers could receive broadcasts without using their mobile data allowance or requiring a SIM card for reception. For Indian households watching their daily data limits, this could offer another way to access television content.
The technology also has potential uses beyond entertainment. Educational programmes, emergency alerts and disaster updates could reach compatible devices through the broadcast network, including in areas where internet connectivity is limited, provided D2M coverage is available.
However, phone compatibility remains crucial. Devices must support D2M reception, and existing smartphones should not automatically be assumed to work with the service. Dwivedi has clarified that manufacturers will not be required to make D2M-capable phones; participation will be voluntary.
The proposed service would operate through a public-private partnership. Prasar Bharati would contribute infrastructure and allocated spectrum, while its partner would provide transmission technology and arrange content partnerships.
For viewers, the next announcements to watch are supported devices, coverage, available channels and pricing. Receiving broadcasts without mobile data does not, by itself, guarantee that every channel will be free.
