Description: An unusual iPhone theft case from Dehradun has attracted widespread attention after the person allegedly holding the stolen device contacted the affected family and repeatedly asked for its passcode. The theft reportedly took place in Clement Town on September 12, while the account gained attention online in October.
Kaushiki Dhyani shared the incident on social media, posting screenshots of messages alongside CCTV footage and a photograph of a suspected thief. According to her account, the sender contacted the family through SMS and WhatsApp, apparently unable to unlock the phone.
The messages repeatedly demanded that the family provide the passcode quickly. The sender also reportedly shared an image of the phone’s screen. Dhyani said a contact number displayed on the locked device had allowed the person to reach them. The family did not provide the passcode.
Alongside the unusual exchange, Dhyani raised concerns about the police response. She alleged that several residents had lost phones, laptops and other valuables, and questioned why the information shared with investigators had not led to faster action.
Police, however, said they had received a theft complaint and assigned a surveillance team. According to their response, the device was entered on the CEIR portal for tracing after its IMEI number became available. Officers also said the number used to request the password was under surveillance and efforts to recover the phone were continuing.
The incident has prompted online reactions ranging from amusement at the alleged thief’s demands to questions about the handling of theft complaints.
