The Invisible Systems That Run the World | Will Aldridge | TEDxOsney
Description: Before you arrived here today, hundreds of people you will never meet helped make your morning possible.
Electricity, water, transport, logistics, infrastructure, information, and countless handovers operate quietly behind the visible world around us. In this talk, Will Aldridge explores the invisible systems of coordination that allow modern civilization to function.
Drawing on experience in military operations, infrastructure logistics, and technology transformation, including work supporting major nuclear construction programs, Will explains why complex systems can fail even when every individual is making a reasonable decision.
At the heart of his argument is the idea of operational visibility: giving the right people a shared, trusted picture of where something is, what state it is in and what needs to happen next.
Technology, automation and AI can help — but technology alone cannot create coordination or trust.
The future of complex systems may depend less on having more data and more on knowing what that data means, who needs to act, and when. Will Aldridge is a Product & Platform Lead and former British Army Officer with a background in operational planning, logistics and technology-driven transformation. After seven years serving in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), Will transitioned into infrastructure, logistics and digital operations, where he now works on large-scale operational systems across security, aviation and major infrastructure environments.
His experience spans military deployments, airport logistics, operational transformation and data-driven decision-making in highly complex environments, including infrastructure logistics supporting the Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C nuclear construction programmes.
Will is particularly interested in how invisible systems — logistics, coordination and data visibility — quietly shape modern society and influence human behavior at scale. Through his work, he explores how technology and operational visibility can improve resilience and reduce complexity. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Close description
