Moana 2 "Meet Matangi" Scene | Animation Breakdowns
Description: Step behind the scenes of Moana 2 with this incredible animation shot progression from Matangi's introduction sequence!
In this breakdown, the original animator shares their experience working on one of their most technically challenging and fun shots—the intense interaction between Moana and the new villain, Matangi. Watch how the shot evolves from live-action reference to the stunning final render!
According to the animator's notes, here are the progression steps:
1️⃣ Reference Stage: Nearly 3 hours of exploring Matangi's personality with Malerie Walters to find the perfect take.
2️⃣ Blocking: Stepped blocking to present to the directors. The performance was approved early on, with only minor adjustments needed like clearing Matangi's hands from her face in screen space.
3️⃣ Animation Polish: Tracking the arcs and getting the characters fully on model.
4️⃣ Technical Animation: This is where the shot truly got a new life in terms of fluidity. Adam Levy did an amazing job choreographing Matangi's cape and flowing hair over Moana's face.
5️⃣ Final Animation & Stage Comparison.
