Case study 247 | Cerebral Aneurysm and Subarachnoid Hemorrhage explained by Dr Betsy Grunch
Description: About 1 in 50 people have an aneurysm in their brain, and most have no idea.An aneurysm is a weakened area of a brain artery that bulges outward. Many cause no symptoms and are discovered incidentally. If one ruptures, it can cause life-threatening bleeding around the brain, called a subarachnoid hemorrhage.
🚨 Know the warning signs:
• A sudden, severe “thunderclap” headache that reaches maximum intensity within seconds
• Nausea or vomiting
• Neck stiffness or sensitivity to light
• Loss of consciousness, seizures, or new weakness
A sudden thunderclap headache warrants calling 911 even if it improves. Don’t wait for every symptom to appear.
Smoking and high blood pressure increase aneurysm risk. Family history can also matter, so tell your clinician if close relatives have had brain aneurysms.
Finding an aneurysm doesn’t automatically mean surgery. Some are monitored; others need clipping or treatment through the blood vessels, such as coiling or flow diversion. The decision depends on the aneurysm’s characteristics and the individual’s risk.
