Criminals in India Love Africa! Why They Find Safe ‘Heaven’ in Africa? #shorts
Description: India’s efforts to bring back fugitives face legal hurdles in countries without established extradition frameworks. However, describing Kenya or Africa broadly as a guaranteed “safe haven” overlooks differences between national laws and the cooperation already available.
India has extradition treaties with several African countries, including South Africa, Mauritius and Malawi, alongside an extradition arrangement with Tanzania.
Extradition is a legal process through which one country seeks the surrender of a person wanted for prosecution or punishment. Indian authorities cannot simply arrest someone on foreign territory. They must work through the country’s authorities and applicable legal procedures. Evidence, identity verification and judicial scrutiny can affect whether a request succeeds and how long it takes.
The absence of a bilateral treaty can complicate proceedings, but does not automatically prevent a return. Other applicable arrangements, international conventions or lawful deportation procedures may provide alternatives, depending on the country and circumstances.
An Interpol Red Notice also does not guarantee arrest or extradition. It requests international police cooperation; each country determines its response under domestic law.
Tuvalu, a Pacific island country, does not appear on India’s published list of bilateral extradition treaties and arrangements. Other island nations absent from that list include Kiribati, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu. This establishes a gap in the published bilateral framework, not evidence that these countries shelter Indian fugitives.
