No Cheap Phones in India! Only Expensive! Gov REJECTED Cheap Android Tax India! #shorts

Description: Indian smartphone buyers hoping for lower prices received no GST relief after the council’s October 8 meeting. Mobile phones remain taxed at 18%, with no reduction to the 5% slab announced in the meeting’s recommendations.

The demand came from the India Cellular and Electronics Association, which urged the government to reduce GST on mobile phones amid weakening demand and rising component costs. The appeal covered mobile phones generally, including Android devices and iPhones, rather than an Android-only concession.

For budget-conscious consumers, the proposed reduction could have made a meaningful difference. A phone with a ₹10,000 price before tax costs ₹11,800 at 18% GST. At 5%, the same base price would produce a ₹10,500 bill—a hypothetical saving of ₹1,300, assuming the underlying price remained unchanged.

The industry association has argued that smartphones are essential tools for education, payments, employment and access to government services. It also cited pressure on affordable handsets as memory-chip costs increased and consumers delayed replacing their devices.

However, the absence of a tax cut should not automatically be described as a formal rejection of an Android-specific proposal. The published outcome confirms that no mobile-phone reduction was announced.

The 57th GST Council meeting focused largely on simplifying registration, refunds, input tax credit and compliance procedures for businesses.

For Indian households planning a phone purchase, the immediate position is unchanged: the applicable GST remains 18%. Any price reduction currently offered by a brand or retailer would depend on discounts, product pricing or other commercial factors, rather than a newly approved 5% smartphone tax.
