Are We Being Silenced? | Thought Police #13
Description: Who decides what you see online, and how much power do governments and tech platforms really have over what reaches you?
In Episode 13 of Thought Police, Mike Graham and Lewis Schaffer take on censorship, free speech, artificial intelligence, YouTube algorithms, so-called “trusted news” and the growing fear that inconvenient opinions can simply be made harder to find.
Mike reflects on his experience questioning government policy during the Covid era, including his interviews with Peter Hitchens, and recalls a time when broadcasters and journalists were under pressure not to challenge the official line. He argues that online platforms now have the ability to suppress, label or bury content without viewers necessarily knowing it is happening.
The pair also get into the dangers of AI, deepfake voices, whether public figures will soon need legal protection from digital impersonation, and whether governments can be trusted with increasingly powerful technology.
Elsewhere, Lewis worries about viewing figures, friendship, flattery, whether Mike actually likes him, his upcoming stand-up show and his continuing crisis of confidence.
As ever, Thought Police is part politics, part comedy, part argument and part therapy session nobody asked for.
