Building INSANE GULLWING Doors for Mat Armstrong’s BMW E24
Description: Mat Armstrong’s BMW E24 is finally getting the crazy gullwing doors we’ve been designing!
But there's a problem…
While building the door frame and roof section, we discover a fundamental issue with our original gullwing door hinge design. Rather than risking building the wrong thing in steel, we go back to the drawing board and come up with a slightly different solution.
We then laser cut the new hinge design from wood to test the concept and make sure the movement works exactly as we need it to.
And once the wooden prototype works, there's only one thing left to do…
BUILD IT IN STEEL.
We cut the new gullwing mechanism out of steel, mount it onto our test jig and put the design through its biggest test yet.
And this time…
IT ACTUALLY WORKS!
This is a huge milestone in the build of Mat Armstrong’s BMW E24, and we're getting closer to the moment when these completely custom gullwing doors can finally be fitted to the car.
The original BMW E24 doors were never designed for this, so we're having to engineer the entire system from scratch — including the hinges, door structure and roof mounting.
This is one of the most ambitious custom car fabrication projects we've taken on
