Description: Opening A Sea Egg-Sack‼️😱
This strange capsule is an egg case from a giant Pacific skate, also called a big skate.
And what’s inside is even more interesting.
When the egg case is first deposited, much of the space around the developing embryos is filled with a clear, gelatinous fluid called albumen. This material is rich in water and proteins and helps stabilize and protect the eggs during early development.
As the embryos develop, that thick albumen gradually becomes thinner and eventually disappears. Respiratory canals in the case open, allowing fresh seawater to flow through the capsule and provide oxygen. The developing skates can even move their tails to help circulate that water.
The egg case itself is extremely tough. Its flattened shape, ridges, keels and surface structure affect how water flows around it, helping it remain stable on the ocean floor even where currents are strong.
And depending on the skate species, egg cases can use horns, fibers or sticky material to grip the substrate and keep them from being swept away. Big skate egg cases have their own distinctive shape and anchoring adaptations.
But here’s one of the coolest parts: big skates can develop multiple babies inside a single egg case. Several embryos can grow together, each using its own yolk supply for nutrition.
So inside this leathery capsule is an entire protected environment designed to keep developing skates supplied with nutrients, oxygen and protection until they’re ready to hatch.
