Case Study 241 | Complex Regional Pain Syndrome | explained by Dr. Betsy Grunch (also known as RSD
Description: Case Study 241 — Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
One of the most misunderstood pain conditions we treat. It usually starts with something minor (a sprain, a fracture, a small surgery) but instead of healing, the pain escalates.
Here’s what to know:
- The pain is out of proportion to the injury, often burning or throbbing, with skin so sensitive that even a bedsheet or a light breeze hurts.
- The limb can swell, change color (red, blue, blotchy), and shift between warm and cold. Skin, hair, and nails can change too.
Why? The nervous system’s pain and regulatory circuits get stuck in an amplified, maladaptive state - a mix of nerve, inflammatory, and autonomic dysfunction.
There’s no single test. Diagnosis is clinical, guided by the Budapest Criteria.
