Aggregating anemones are much smaller and often form huge colonies across the rocks. They can reproduce by splitting themselves in half, creating genetically identical clones right next to each other!
🐌 Snails and limpets are everywhere in the intertidal zone. Snails crawl across the rocks feeding on algae, while limpets use their powerful muscular foot to hold tightly to rocks during crashing waves and low tides.
Mussels can cover entire sections of rocky shoreline. They attach themselves using strong fibers called byssal threads, helping them stay anchored to the rocks.
🦀 Crabs hide underneath rocks, inside cracks, and throughout the tidepools. Oregon’s rocky intertidal zone is home to several different species of crabs.
Hermit crabs are different because their abdomen is soft and vulnerable, so they use empty snail shells for protection. As they grow, they have to find larger shells to move into!
