Flock has issued a legal demand to shut down a public map exposing its surveillance network

Description: Cybersecurity researcher Joshua Michael built the Flock Surveillance Map using location data retrieved from unauthenticated public endpoints. The database documented more than 335,000 automated license plate readers and acoustic sensors, revealing a footprint that significantly exceeds the company's publicly stated figures.

A defense firm acting for Flock Safety filed the takedown request on September 24, 2026, arguing that the independent project used the brand name without authorization. Despite the website carrying a clear disclaimer of no affiliation, this legal action arrived just one day after a Senate hearing scrutinized the company's privacy practices, fueling an ongoing debate over corporate transparency.

How much public oversight should be required for private surveillance technology operating in local neighborhoods?
