“‘A Small Price to Pay’ — The Comment Sparking Outrage” #breakingnews #trump #newsom #geopolitics

Description: At his Monday rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, Trump suggested Iran could “take out” Los Angeles or San Diego if the country developed a nuclear weapon, calling it “a very small price to pay” to keep the broader world safe. Attendees reportedly cheered. It wasn’t immediately clear exactly what Trump meant, and the White House’s rapid response account insisted afterward that his words were being misinterpreted. California Gov. Gavin Newsom responded on X: “after sending the National Guard and Marines to occupy California, Donald Trump is now saying our foreign enemies should ‘take out’ Los Angeles and San Diego. He is deranged and dangerous.” Newsom’s office added, “the President is advocating for an attack on 10+ million U.S. residents in two of America’s largest cities. This is not normal.” Newsom said he’s directing the State Threat Assessment Center to actively monitor whether foreign actors interpret the remarks as an invitation to target California, and in a statement to CBS News, called for Trump’s removal under the 25th Amendment. LA Mayor Karen Bass also condemned the comments as “dangerous.” Trump separately said the Iran war would “end very quickly, one way or the other, very soon.”

My take: “Whatever the intended meaning, a comment suggesting American cities as acceptable targets drew genuinely serious responses from multiple California officials, not just a typical partisan rebuttal, that’s worth sitting with regardless of how the remark was meant.”

CTA: “What’s your read on what he actually meant here?”
