“The State Is Running Out of Money” | Steve Baker on Reform, Tories, Trump & Britain’s Future
Description: Former Conservative minister and leading Brexit organiser Steve Baker joins Ellie Hodges for a wide-ranging conversation on the future of Britain, the Conservative Party, Reform UK, Nigel Farage, welfare reform, taxation and the size of the state.
Baker argues that Britain has spent decades pursuing a high-tax, high-spending model and says the country needs lower spending, lighter regulation and a stronger focus on enterprise. He also discusses his Fighting for a Free Future project and why he believes the political debate needs to move further upstream, towards ideas rather than personalities.
Ellie and Steve also tackle the welfare system, benefits and work, before turning to Donald Trump, Andy Burnham and the Chagos Islands. Baker gives his view on the UK’s relationship with the United States and criticises the current direction of the Chagos deal.
The conversation then moves to the battle between the Conservatives and Reform UK, including whether the right can ever unite, Nigel Farage’s role in Reform, and the challenge of rebuilding a broader centre-right coalition.
Finally, Baker takes Ellie behind the scenes of Westminster and explains what it was actually like organising rebellions during the Theresa May years, how political plotting works, why secrecy is so difficult in Parliament, and how MPs can privately disagree with a policy while publicly defending it.
