Brian W. Aldiss — Frankenstein Unbound
Description: Tales of the Sonic Voyage presents
Brian W. Aldiss — Frankenstein Unbound
Tonight we’re stepping into a world where the person who imagined a monster and the monster himself can exist in the same place. Frankenstein Unbound brings together Gothic horror, science fiction, and the unsettling possibility that the boundaries between a story and reality might suddenly disappear.
Brian W. Aldiss was a British novelist and short-story writer whose imagination often carried him beyond the familiar expectations of science fiction. His writing explored humanity’s place in strange worlds, but he was equally interested in the people doing the exploring: their fears, their ambitions, and the consequences of their decisions. With Frankenstein Unbound, he returned to one of the works that helped shape the genre and approached it with both affection and a willingness to ask new questions.
First published in 1973, the novel was conceived as a tribute to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Aldiss had also been examining the history of science fiction in Billion Year Spree, where he argued for the importance of Shelley’s novel to the genre’s beginnings. Frankenstein Unbound allowed him to carry that interest into a story of his own.
Its central character, Joe Bodenland, is transported from the troubled America of 2020 to Switzerland in 1816. At first, the countryside seems to offer an escape from the dangers of his own century. That comfort becomes harder to hold onto when he encounters Victor Frankenstein and finds himself in a world where literary invention has become something frighteningly real. Mary Shelley and the creation associated with her imagination belong to the same unfolding mystery.
The recording presented here is an abridged dramatization produced in cooperation with the BBC, with Aldiss himself providing the narration. The BBC production was subsequently edited for an LP release, including an American edition issued by Alternate World Recordings. Hearing the author guide us through his own story gives this recording a particular appeal: we’re listening to the voice behind the original imagination as the drama takes shape around it.
There’s plenty here for listeners who enjoy the meeting place between horror and speculative fiction. Frankenstein’s creation carries questions that reach beyond its nineteenth-century setting: what responsibility does a creator owe to what he brings into the world, and what happens when ambition moves faster than understanding? Bringing a visitor from the future into that world gives those questions another uncomfortable dimension.
For our Halloween listening, this is an invitation to let a story occupy the room. Settle in and follow Aldiss into a landscape where the familiar names of Gothic literature no longer stay safely on the page.
