Pink Floyd — Live at Soldier Field
Chicago, Illinois — June 19, 1977
In the Flesh Tour

We're heading to Chicago for Pink Floyd at Soldier Field, with Animals still a new release and the In the Flesh tour bringing its pointed view of human behavior to a stadium audience. This evening is built around two complete albums: Animals in the first set and Wish You Were Here in the second, followed by Money. If those records have earned a permanent place in your collection, this is a chance to spend an evening with both.

Pink Floyd began in London in the mid-1960s, initially gaining attention through Syd Barrett's songwriting and their place in the underground psychedelic scene. After David Gilmour joined and Barrett departed in 1968, Gilmour, Roger Waters, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason developed the group through soundtrack projects, experimental records, and increasingly ambitious album-length work.

The Dark Side of the Moon transformed their audience in 1973.

By the time Wish You Were Here arrived in 1975, Floyd was dealing with the expectations that came with enormous success. That album confronted the machinery of the record business while also reflecting on absence and the band's relationship with Barrett. Its personal concerns reached listeners far beyond the circumstances that inspired it.
Animals followed in January 1977.

Roger Waters used the categories of dogs, pigs, and sheep to examine exploitation, authority, conformity, and survival. The animal imagery recalls George Orwell, but Waters turned it toward his own critique of society. It's an angry record, with brief expressions of companionship framing the larger, harsher compositions.

There was a long road behind some of that new music. Earlier forms of Dogs and Sheep had been performed before Animals was released, under the working titles You've Got to Be Crazy and Raving and Drooling. By 1977, they had become part of a tightly defined album. The tour let audiences hear those finished identities in concert, with arrangements adapted for the stage.

At Soldier Field on June 19, the band presented all five Animals selections, but changed their running order from the record. Sheep opened the programme, with the two parts of Pigs on the Wing placed around Dogs and Pigs (Three Different Ones) closing the set. The second half followed the sequence of Wish You Were Here, keeping its opening and closing sections of Shine On You Crazy Diamond around the three intervening songs.

That commitment to whole albums is what makes this tour especially appealing to me. There is a reason for the order and a relationship between the pieces. We get to follow the ideas through a complete set instead of encountering only isolated favorites.

The evening also brings together two different perspectives: Animals looks outward at society, while Wish You Were Here turns toward absence, relationships, and the business surrounding the musicians themselves.

The touring lineup expanded beyond the familiar quartet. Snowy White supplied additional guitar work and took over bass duties on certain selections, allowing Waters to play guitar. Dick Parry brought saxophone and additional keyboards. Those roles mattered when transferring recordings with multiple instrumental layers into a concert performed by six musicians.

White and Parry deserve their place in the credits for this evening. They were part of the working band that brought these arrangements to audiences throughout the tour, with White contributing his guitar phrasing and Parry returning a saxophone voice already familiar to Floyd listeners.

For anyone exploring Floyd chronologically, this show occupies the period after Animals and before The Wall. Their audience had grown dramatically from the club and auditorium years, and the 1977 tour belongs to that larger chapter. This Chicago recording lets us revisit the repertoire they chose to present at that moment, before the next album redirected their concert programme.
