Messer Chups – Taste the Blood of Guitaracula (2017)
Tonight we return to the wonderfully strange world of Messer Chups with Taste the Blood of Guitaracula. This 2017 album brings their love of surf guitar, rockabilly rhythms and vintage horror imagery into a collection full of twang, atmosphere and mischievous energy. Imagine the music spilling from a drive-in theater after midnight, with monsters gathering behind the screen and something suspicious moving through the parking lot.
Messer Chups began in 1998 as a project of Oleg Fomchenkov, known as Oleg Gitarkin and Guitaracula. Its beginnings connect with his work in Messer für Frau Müller and an interest in combining older musical styles with electronic experimentation. The project developed a distinctive personality through unusual samples, cinematic references and instrumental ideas that could be eerie, funny and strangely inviting at the same time.
Associated with Saint Petersburg, Russia, the band built an international audience around a sound that looked back toward early rock and roll while making room for their own peculiar imagination. Surf music became a central element, providing ringing melodies and an expressive guitar vocabulary around which the other influences could gather.
Svetlana Nagaeva, better known as Zombierella, joined on bass in 2005. Her musical partnership with Guitaracula helped establish the recognizable identity of the group. With live drums added to the lineup, Messer Chups developed a stronger connection to the energy of a performing rock band. By the period surrounding this release, drummer Evgeny “Rockin’ Eugene” Lomakin completed the trio.
Taste the Blood of Guitaracula belongs to that established guitar, bass and drums era. The band’s official release listing dates this edition to October 13, 2017—a Friday the 13th, appropriately enough. It arrived during their North American Halloween Howling tour, placing the music directly within the season its imagery so enthusiastically celebrates.
Guitaracula’s playing is the guiding voice throughout the album. Reverberating notes, agile melodic phrases and rhythmic accents give the music its immediate character. The guitar can sound bright and inviting while still carrying a suggestion of something lurking nearby. Its expressive twang supplies much of the drama without needing lengthy lyrics to explain the scene.
Zombierella’s bass brings weight and movement beneath those melodies, while the drums give the arrangements their forward drive. Together, the rhythm section keeps the music grounded and danceable. That foundation lets the guitar move between catchy hooks and more atmospheric passages while preserving the compact shape of the songs.
The album draws from the language of instrumental surf rock, with rockabilly and garage influences adding bite. Its horror references introduce a theatrical setting where vampires, mysterious creatures and familiar screen characters can share the same musical landscape. There is humor in that setting, but the melodies and rhythmic interplay give the record substance beyond the amusing names.
The compositions are generally concise, giving their strongest ideas room to establish themselves without losing momentum. That makes the album an engaging listen from beginning to end: a succession of instrumental scenes connected by the band’s unmistakable sound. The shifts between playful energy and darker atmosphere help keep the experience moving.
For our Halloween celebration, Taste the Blood of Guitaracula brings a welcome dose of fun alongside the shadows. It belongs to the side of the season filled with midnight movies, rubber monsters, strange encounters and music you can actually move to. Settle in, turn it up and let Guitaracula and company provide the soundtrack.
