The premise of Reporting Live is genuinely interesting. Sandhya, an ambitious investigative journalist played by Parineeti Chopra, and Vinod, her video journalist and friend played by Deven Bhojani, begin investigating what appears to be a tragic accident. But as they dig deeper, they uncover an illegal sand-mining operation and a dangerous nexus of money, crime and power.
The biggest problem? The story is far more interesting than the movie itself.
Illegal sand mining is a fascinating subject for a Hindi investigative thriller, and the film deserves credit for researching the issue. But the screenplay struggles to turn that material into an engaging investigation. The dialogues are overly explanatory, the writing is predictable, and the story often tells you exactly what is happening instead of allowing you to discover it alongside the journalists.
The film also struggles with pacing, direction and background music. Instead of making you feel the challenges of investigative journalism, the investigation often moves through convenient developments and montages that take away from the suspense.
What works, however, is the chemistry between Parineeti Chopra and Deven Bhojani. Their friendship feels natural, and both actors bring some much-needed warmth to the story. The ending also has a few unexpected choices that work better than I anticipated.
So, is Reporting Live worth watching on Netflix? Does Parineeti Chopra's investigative thriller deliver on its promising premise, or does weak writing get in the way of a story worth telling?
