South Africa Anti-Migrant Clashes: Ramaphosa Govt Withdraws Asylum Directive | Firstpost Africa

Description: Watch this video as Firstpost explains how violent anti-immigration protests have erupted across major South African urban hubs, including Soweto and Durban, following a landmark Constitutional Court ruling. The court decided that individuals can apply for asylum regardless of their entry status or missed deadlines, sparking intense public backlash and overcrowding at immigration centres. Demonstrators clashed with foreign nationals, torched at least 24 vehicles, and looted local foreign-owned spaza shops, forcing police to deploy rubber bullets. While community leaders claim initial plans called for peaceful demonstrations, stone-throwing and retaliation quickly spiraled out of control. Government officials blame online disinformation for exacerbating panic and clarified that asylum applications will still undergo individual vetting. With Home Affairs overwhelmed, officials are pulling back operational plans to restore public order. The unrest highlights deep-seated socio-economic frustrations in a nation struggling with over 30% unemployment, placing President Cyril Ramaphosa’s administration in a delicate constitutional balancing act. Josh Barnes brings you more on this story on Firstpost Africa.
