In this video, we'll spend 4 incredible days with the Torajan people of South Sulawesi, Indonesia -- Otherwise known as the "Death Tribe".
The Torajan people have a different relationship with death than most of us. For them, death isn't an end; it's a transition. Families live in the same house with the mummified bodies of their deceased loved ones for months—sometimes years—caring for them as if they are sick, while saving money for the massive ritual required to send their soul to Puya (the afterlife).
They also happen to hold the most expensive funeral ceremonies in the world. Most of the cost goes into purchasing buffalo that act as transportation to guide the dead person's soul to the afterlife. After gifting a pig to show our respect, the host family adopted us as their own grandchildren, taking us in for the remainder of the funeral rites.
We experienced everything firsthand—from the chaotic energy of the crowd tossing the coffin into the air while cursing to ward off spirits, to the intense sacrifice of 18 buffaloes, ending at the mausoleum where the body was finally laid to rest. It was raw, humbling, and easily one of the most perspective-changing experiences of our lives.
