Sailors on an Australian-flagged vessel abandoned their yacht after hitting a whale in the South Pacific on Saturday, September 26.

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) released this footage showing the yacht sinking as the sailors waited for rescue on nearby rafts.

“Tasked by Maritime NZ’s Rescue Coordination Centre (RCCNZ), a Royal New Zealand Air Force P-8A Poseidon surveillance aircraft and crew located the sailors and established two-way radio communications with the sailors and vessels in the area that were diverted to assist with the rescue,” NZDF wrote on Facebook.

NZDF said the sailors spent “several hours in the life raft before being rescued at around 6 am by the crew of cargo vessel MV Sofrana Surville and taken to the nearest port.”
