The ‘Unknown CREEPY Liquid’ That Powers India & World! #shorts
Description: The thick, dark fuel associated with large cargo ships is commonly called heavy fuel oil, or HFO. It is made largely from heavier material remaining after crude oil refining and is often blended to meet marine fuel specifications. “Bunker fuel” is a broader term for fuel supplied to ships, rather than one particular product. wartsila.com
Unlike petrol and road diesel, heavy fuel oil is much more viscous. Petrol is lighter and evaporates more readily, while diesel flows more easily than typical heavy marine fuel. Ships using HFO need specialised systems to heat it, reduce its thickness and prepare it for injection into their engines.
The fuel also requires treatment to remove water and contaminants. Marine engines and their fuel-handling equipment are designed for these conditions; ordinary car engines are not.
Cost has historically been a major attraction. Residual fuel generally costs less than marine distillate fuels because it uses lower-value refinery material. However, the saving varies with fuel quality, sulphur content and market conditions. Heating, cleaning, maintenance and emissions-control equipment also add to operating expenses.
Today, ships cannot universally burn traditional high-sulphur fuel without restrictions. Global rules generally limit marine fuel sulphur to 0.50%, with tighter limits in designated areas. Ships may use compliant low-sulphur fuels or approved exhaust-cleaning systems known as scrubbers.
For India, these fuel choices matter because shipping costs influence the movement of imports and exports. Cheaper fuel can help reduce operating costs, but its purchase price alone does not determine the final freight bill.
