I Shall Live Only to Honour You | from Bach's Christmas Oratorio |

Description: Johann Sebastian Bach: Christmas Oratorio BWV 248

The Christmas Oratorio (German: Weihnachtsoratorium), BWV 248, is an oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach intended for performance in church during the Christmas season. It is in six parts, each part a cantata intended for performance in a church service on a feast day of the Christmas period. It was written for the Christmas season of 1734 and incorporates music from earlier compositions, including three secular cantatas written during 1733 and 1734 and a largely lost church cantata, BWV 248a. The date is confirmed in Bach's autograph manuscript.

The season 2023/24 will see his return to Staatsoper Berlin in the roles of Asle/Sleepless, conducted by Peter Eötvös, and Tamino/Die Zauberflöte. He will make his house debut as Jaquino/Fidelio at De Nationale Opera Amsterdam, debut as Ferrando/Cosi fan tutte with the Orchestra of the 18th Century, with concerts in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, and sing Arbace/Idomeneo with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.
