China Just Got The GWM Tank 300 Hi4Z Australia Should Be Getting

Description: GWM just deleted the transfer case from the Tank 300, and the 4x4 world is not ready for it. We were in China for the all new Tank 300 launch, and the new Hi4-Z version completely changes how this thing puts power to the ground.

Instead of a mechanical transfer case and centre diff, the Hi4-Z runs a 180kW front motor, a 200kW rear motor and a 59.6kWh battery for a combined 560kW. That is 0 to 100km/h in 4.3 seconds in a body-on-frame off roader, with 200km of electric only range and 1,122km combined. Before you panic, it still runs gear reduction on both axles, so low speed crawling has not disappeared, it is just done a completely different way.

The Hi4-T is still here for the purists, keeping the non-decoupled four wheel drive setup with a 130kW front motor and a 37.1kWh battery, good for 105km of EV range and 6.1 seconds to 100km/h.

GWM says the new Tank 300 carries 553 upgrades with more than half the components reworked. The hybrid Tank 300L stretches the wheelbase to 3,010mm, the front overhang is shorter for a better approach angle, and the grille now wears blacked out TANK lettering instead of the old T badge. Hybrid variants pick up 27 sensors including LiDAR, Coffee Pilot 3 with all scenario NOA, a 15.6 inch 2.5K screen, 6kW of vehicle to load and 2.5 tonnes of braked towing. There are even factory options like an oxygen generator and satellite comms.

Here is the part that stings. In China the petrol version starts at 199,800 yuan and the 560kW Hi4-Z lands at 259,800 yuan, roughly AU$42,000 and AU$55,000 as a straight currency conversion. That is about what we pay here for the 300kW Hi4-T.

Six new colours launched with it too: Shining Yellow, Passion Red, Serene Teal, White, Black and Dune Beige.

So is dropping the transfer case the right call for a proper 4x4, or has GWM gone soft? Tell us in the comments.
