Today we're going to explore a completely different side of Tokyo!
We'll start our adventure around Tokyo Station and make our way through Marunouchi and Hibiya, surrounded by some of the modern skyscrapers and busy streets of central Tokyo. 🏙️
But from there, we're heading somewhere with a VERY different atmosphere...
Shinagawa!
When you hear "Shinagawa" today, you might immediately think of the huge station, skyscrapers, offices and modern Tokyo.
But Shinagawa has a much older history!
Today we're going to head towards Kita-Shinagawa and explore the historic Shinagawa-juku area. 🏮🇯🇵
Shinagawa-juku was the first post town on the old Tokaido road when traveling from Edo towards Kyoto.
Hundreds of years ago, travelers leaving Edo would pass through this area at the beginning of their journey along one of Japan's most important historical routes.
And even though modern Tokyo has grown all around it, parts of the old neighborhood and its history can still be discovered today!
We'll walk along the old Tokaido, explore the streets around Kita-Shinagawa, look for temples, shrines, old shops and other reminders of the area's past, and see what interesting things we can find along the way. ⛩️🏮
Shinagawa was also once a coastal town, so I'm interested to see some of the places that still hint at its connection to the sea and compare them with the huge modern city that surrounds the area today. 🌊🏙️
I think the contrast should be really interesting—from the skyscrapers and business districts of modern central Tokyo to the streets of an old Edo-period post town!
So come spend the day exploring Tokyo with me as we leave the modern city behind and search for pieces of OLD Tokyo hiding around Shinagawa!
