STORYLINE:
Supporters of Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro celebrated across Brazil late Sunday after the conservative candidate secured a place in a high-stakes presidential runoff against incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, following a tightly contested first-round vote.

The country’s electoral court in Brasilia said neither the 80-year-old incumbent, seeking his fourth non-consecutive term, nor the 45-year-old son of former President Jair Bolsonaro would garner the majority vote needed for an outright win.

The court had Bolsonaro with just over 56 million votes to Lula’s 53.7 million, with 99.8% of the vote reported.

The outcome presents a pivotal moment for Latin America's largest economy and its population of 214 million, with the next presidential term set to begin Jan. 5.

A victory for Bolsonaro could strengthen Washington's influence in the region, while a win for Lula would maintain Brazil's non-aligned foreign policy and close ties with China.

For many conservative voters, the first-round results were seen as a rebuke of the current administration.

“They keep putting all the blame on Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro governed Brazil during the pandemic for four years," said Eduardo Linhares, 51, a shopkeeper in Rio.

If a car crashes, it's Bolsonaro's fault; if a child falls, it's Bolsonaro's fault. There is too much corruption, too many empty promises, enough suffering. Enough, it's over.”

Meanwhile, in São Paulo, Lula supporters gathered on Avenida Paulista, though the atmosphere among some voters subdued following the narrow result.

"I find it very frustrating," said Diego Francisco Damasio, a Lula supporter in São Paulo.

"I understand the anti-Workers' Party sentiment — the people who say we need to end corruption. Nobody likes corruption. But I cannot understand anyone who uses that rhetoric and thinks Flávio is an option.”

With the campaign moving into its final three weeks, both candidates are expected to target undecided voters and those who abstained in Sunday's election.
