The Ocean Knows: Turning Data Into Coastal Resilience | Jagadish Kumar Vallarampara | TEDxOsney
Description: We have more information about our oceans than ever before. But what happens when that knowledge doesn't reach the people who need it in time?
Oceanographer and climate resilience strategist Jagadish Kumar Vallarampara draws on more than two decades of experience working with ocean data, offshore environments, and coastal systems to explore a critical distinction: knowledge only becomes powerful when it reaches people and becomes action.
From a missed helicopter flight and the lessons of offshore survival to the devastating consequences of warnings that fail to reach vulnerable coastal communities, Jagadish asks us to rethink what ocean intelligence is for.
His journey leads to TERAOM — a vision for coastal infrastructure that brings together energy, habitat, and real-time intelligence, transforming defensive structures into systems designed for resilience. "Jagadish Vallarampara is a climate resilience strategist and offshore systems specialist exploring how future coastal infrastructure can evolve beyond traditional defensive engineering. Through TERAOM (Technology-based Environmental Restoration and Ocean Management), he is developing concepts that combine renewable energy, AI-driven environmental intelligence, carbon sequestration, and adaptive coastal infrastructure into integrated “living” resilience ecosystems.
Drawing from experience in offshore energy, marine operations, climate-risk systems, and environmental analytics, his work focuses on transforming vulnerable coastlines into intelligent net-zero coastal hubs capable of generating clean energy, restoring ecosystems, and improving long-term urban resilience. His research integrates metocean intelligence, nature-based solutions, and advanced infrastructure thinking to address the accelerating risks posed by sea-level rise and climate change. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Close description
