Description: Indian Railways has introduced its first LNG-diesel dual-fuel DEMU train, flagged off from Sabarmati in Ahmedabad. The initiative aims to reduce diesel consumption by using liquefied natural gas alongside conventional fuel, adding another option to India’s railway energy mix.
The project involves converted driving power cars with a system designed to replace approximately 40% of diesel consumption with LNG. It therefore continues to use diesel rather than operating entirely on gas. The eight-coach train completed its inaugural journey towards Mahesana after more than 2,000 kilometres of field trials.
Railways estimated annual fuel savings of approximately ₹23.9 lakh for the rake, alongside expected reductions in exhaust emissions. These are estimates, with actual savings dependent on fuel prices, operating conditions and utilisation.
The development fits into a broader opportunity for India as new global LNG production and export projects expand supply towards 2030. A February 2025 energy outlook projected that India’s LNG imports could more than double to around 65 billion cubic metres annually by 2030 as domestic demand grows faster than production.
However, expectations of abundant, cheaper LNG during 2025–2030 now require caution. An April 2026 assessment warned that Middle East conflict, shipping disruption and infrastructure damage had delayed the anticipated supply wave and increased price volatility. More planned capacity does not guarantee uninterrupted availability or consistently low prices. IEA
