LeetCode 1886 | Determine Whether Matrix Can Be Obtained By Rotation | Java | Easy | CodeByTushu
Description: π Welcome Back to CodeByTushu!
In todayβs video, we solve LeetCode 1886 β Determine Whether Matrix Can Be Obtained By Rotation using Matrix Simulation and Coordinate Transformations in Java.
We are given two n x n binary matrices, mat and target. Our goal is to determine if we can make mat equal to target by rotating mat in 90-degree increments. Since rotating a 2D matrix four times returns it to its original orientation, there are exactly four candidate rotations to verify: 0, 90, 180, and 270 degrees clockwise.
Instead of creating intermediate matrices and performing costly multiple in-place transformations, we track four boolean flags for each degree of rotation simultaneously. In a single pass through the n x n matrix, we compare mat(i, j) with the corresponding rotated target coordinate. If any of the four flags remains true throughout the entire matrix traversal, a valid rotation exists, giving an optimal O(n^2) runtime and O(1) auxiliary space.
π₯ Problem Highlights
β Complete Rotation Coverage: Evaluates all four valid rotational orientations (0Β°, 90Β°, 180Β°, 270Β°)
β Single-Pass Efficiency: Checks all four rotation candidates concurrently without multiple loops
β Direct Coordinate Transformations: Maps cell (i, j) to (j, n - 1 - i), (n - 1 - i, n - 1 - j), and (n - 1 - j, i)
β Zero Additional Memory: Avoids allocating new 2D grid buffers or copying memory
β Edge Cases Handled: Matrices already identical at 0Β°, symmetric configurations, and small n = 1 matrices
β Optimal Complexity: O(n^2) time complexity and O(1) auxiliary space
