Description: Leaving a stable job at a big company to explore the wild with a camera takes remarkable courage. Independent photographer Mr. Qilin did exactly that. After working in Kenya for four years, he chose to capture the real stories of nature and people through his lens and writing. Traveling through remote areas across different countries, he documented many powerful moments and authored the book The Camel Diaries. He showed us that the most powerful stories are not framed in a studio, but found in the real world. Qi Lin, born in 1984, graduated from the School of Astronautics at Northwestern Polytechnical University. He previously worked as a project manager at a state-owned enterprise and was posted to Kenya for four years beginning in 2011.
Now an independent photographer and documentary creator, he has spent extended periods working across Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas. Using photography as his language, he documents the complex connections among resources, people, land, and survival. In 2026, his first work of travel literature, The Camel Diaries: Walking Across Kenya, was published by The Commercial Press. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Close description
