Description: Tales of the Sonic Voyage Presents

CBS Radio Mystery Theater Halloween Marathon

Episodes 26–30

Hello, my fellow passengers. Our October voyage continues with another five stories from CBS Radio Mystery Theater. This installment takes us through a dangerous second chance, a murderous case of mistaken identity, a haunted house, an unsettling jungle expedition and a marriage overshadowed by the past.

For those returning to these programmes after many years, that opening door and E. G. Marshall’s voice may bring back memories of listening late at night. If you’re discovering them for the first time, settle in and let the actors, music and sound effects build the scenes around you. Radio leaves you to decide exactly what waits in the darkness.

Created by Himan Brown, CBS Radio Mystery Theater began in January 1974, bringing the traditions of dramatic radio to a new generation of listeners. Its stories ranged from crime and psychological suspense to science fiction and supernatural horror.

Our Halloween marathon continues through the series in episode order, so each installment brings its own mixture of mysteries.

The five programmes presented here originally aired from January 31 through February 4, 1974, during the show’s first month. E. G. Marshall guides us through each story, introducing the circumstances and returning between acts as the complications unfold.

Episode 26 — The Man Who Asked for Yesterday
Originally broadcast January 31, 1974

A man facing death is offered the opportunity to return to the previous day. Knowing what lies ahead should give him an advantage—but changing his decisions may be harder than he expects. We begin with a story about regret, temptation and the uncertain value of a second chance.
Written by Ian Martin.
Cast: Mandel Kramer, Paul Hecht, Evie Juster, Ralph Bell and Gilbert Mack.

Episode 27 — Dead Ringer
Originally broadcast February 1, 1974

A woman encounters a stranger who looks remarkably like her husband. That resemblance becomes the foundation for a dangerous scheme, with deception and financial gain drawing the characters deeper into trouble. This is a crime story where appearances offer little assurance about whom to trust.
Written by Murray Burnett.
Cast: Leon Janney, Joan Lovejoy, Larry Haines, Paul Hecht and Robert Dryden.

Episode 28 — A Ghostly Game of Death
Originally broadcast February 2, 1974

An old house stands in the way of plans for its property, but its reputation makes removing it more complicated than expected. A ghost hunter takes on the challenge of confronting the presence associated with a sea captain’s wife. Spending the night inside brings him closer to the house’s violent history.

Written by Murray Burnett.
Cast: William Prince, Ralph Bell, Joan Tyson, William Redfield and Gilbert Mack.

Episode 29 — The Sign of the Beast
Originally broadcast February 3, 1974

An archaeological expedition enters a world of unfamiliar customs and warnings. A woman’s encounter with an ancient artifact is followed by disturbing changes, raising questions about revenge, belief and the boundary between human and animal. The jungle setting gives this story a different atmosphere from the houses and city streets of the surrounding episodes.
Written by Sam Dann.
Cast: Lois Smith, Paul McGrath, Tom Keena and Dan Ocko.

Episode 30 — Here Goes the Bride
Originally broadcast February 4, 1974

A new bride arrives at her husband’s estate and discovers that his former wife remains a powerful presence in the household. Her predecessor died under suspicious circumstances, and the welcome awaiting the new arrival offers little comfort. We finish with a marriage mystery in which the past threatens to overwhelm the present.
Written by Ian Martin.
Cast: Ruby Dee, Michael Wager, Teri Keane, Bryna Raeburn and Ian Martin.

There’s something particularly fitting about spending part of October with these radio dramas. A voice in an empty room, footsteps approaching a door or a sudden silence can give the imagination plenty to work with. These five stories offer different kinds of suspense, and I hope you enjoy hearing how each one develops.
