Description: If a loco pilot and assistant loco pilot both fall asleep or become unresponsive, an operational Vigilance Control Device can trigger automatic braking. The system is designed to check driver activity and intervene when the required response is missing.
Indian Railways uses this safety mechanism to monitor actions such as operating the power controller, applying brakes or pressing a vigilance button or pedal. Recognised actions reset a timer, indicating that the driver is actively operating the locomotive. A government explanation describes an alertness-checking interval of 60 seconds.
If the system detects no qualifying activity within the prescribed interval, it issues warnings. If the crew still fails to respond, it automatically initiates a brake application. The precise warning sequence and timings depend on the locomotive and its equipment, so one countdown should not be treated as universal across every Indian train.
The device does not directly determine whether someone is sleeping. It responds to missing control inputs or acknowledgements. This means it can also provide protection if a driver becomes medically incapacitated or otherwise unable to respond.
Automatic braking also does not mean the train stops instantly. The train continues moving while slowing down, with stopping distance affected by speed, load, track gradient and braking conditions.
The system therefore provides an important additional safeguard, but it cannot guarantee that every dangerous situation will be avoided. Its effectiveness depends on the equipment functioning correctly and remaining operational.
For passengers, the key point is that braking can begin without a conscious command from either crew member when the vigilance system detects prolonged inactivity.
