CBS Radio Mystery Theater - Halloween Marathon - Episodes 36–40
Description: Tales of the Sonic Voyage Presents
CBS Radio Mystery Theater Halloween Marathon
Episodes 36–40
Running Time: 4 Hours, 40 Minutes, 42 Seconds
Welcome back, my fellow travelers. For this next stretch of our Halloween marathon, we’re entering a world of troubled dreams, discoveries beneath the earth, stormbound suspicion, an English manor and the walking dead.
Episodes 36–40 bring a stronger supernatural flavor to our journey, though uncertainty remains part of the attraction. A strange experience may seem to point toward a curse or an apparition, while the people caught in it search for answers. We get to follow their discoveries without knowing which explanation will survive the final act.
The preserved news, commercials and station announcements remain part of these recordings. Those moments let us hear the broadcast as more than an isolated story. Familiar advertising styles, announcers’ voices and reports from another era place us back beside the radio, waiting for the programme to begin.
CBS Radio Mystery Theater brought that kind of listening experience to audiences beginning in 1974. Producer Himan Brown drew on the traditions of dramatic radio, and E. G. Marshall’s measured delivery provided a familiar guide through stories that could become anything but reassuring.
Episode 36 — A Dream of Death
Originally Broadcast February 12, 1974
A college professor’s belief in reincarnation becomes entangled with the fear that he has broken an agreement from another lifetime. The possibility of a past existence begins to carry consequences for the present. Our opening story follows the unease of someone who suspects that his own history extends further than memory should allow.
Written by Sam Dann.
Cast: Michael Tolan, Marian Seldes, Evie Juster, Ira Lewis and Robert Dryden.
Episode 37 — Dig Me Deadly
Originally Broadcast February 13, 1974
An archaeological excavation uncovers disturbing human remains, and a woman detective is brought in to investigate. What began as a search beneath the ground becomes a mystery about the people connected to the discovery. The evidence has been buried, but the questions it raises are very much alive.
Written by S. Wilson.
Cast: Louise Larabee, Mason Adams, Ralph Bell, Corrine Orr, Ann Costello and Kristoffer Tabori.
Episode 38 — Under Grave Suspicion
Originally Broadcast February 14, 1974
A couple’s bitter disagreement unfolds at a seaside cottage as threatening weather closes in. With a hurricane approaching, their surroundings become increasingly hostile, and the tension between them adds another danger. This episode trades distant legends for the uncomfortable suspense of being confined with someone you no longer feel certain about.
Written by Hank Warner.
Cast: Ralph Bell, Patricia Wheel, Robert Dryden and William Redfield.
Episode 39 — A Lady Never Loses Her Head
Originally Broadcast February 16, 1974
An American woman marries into a British aristocratic family and arrives at its manor house. A headless apparition on horseback introduces a frightening complication to her new life, with details that feel disturbingly personal. We move into a Gothic setting where marriage, identity and a haunting become intertwined.
Written by Ian Martin.
Cast: Kim Hunter, Nick Pryor, Bryna Raeburn, Ian Martin and Court Benson.
Episode 40 — The Walking Corpse
Originally Broadcast February 17, 1974
An American couple on an island becomes caught in political upheaval involving a would-be ruler and an army of zombies. Their trip turns into a confrontation with forces they never expected to encounter. Our final story combines adventure, conspiracy and the terror of the walking dead.
Written by Ian Martin.
Cast: Tony Roberts, Suzanne Grossman, Robert Kaliban, Jackson Beck, Ian Martin and Vinette Carroll.
This block takes us through several different kinds of fear: the thought that an old obligation might follow us into another life, the discovery of something hidden, the uncertainty of a troubled relationship and the possibility that the dead have returned. Each story gives the actors a different world to bring to life.
Settle in, enjoy the broadcasts, and let us know which of these five mysteries stays with you afterward. It’s always interesting to hear which stories people remember—and which ones become new favorites.
