Mat Armstrongs BMW E24 Is Getting the CRAZIEST Custom Doors We’ve Ever Built
Description: Mat Armstrong’s BMW E24 is finally back — and this time we’re starting the CRAZIEST part of the build yet!
After months away from the car, we’re finally ready to tackle the gullwing doors. But there’s a huge problem… the doors can’t simply hinge upwards.
Because of the shape of the E24, the doors need to move sideways first before rotating upwards, meaning we have to design a completely custom mechanism from scratch.
In this episode, we take the idea from CAD and turn it into a working wooden prototype to prove that the movement is actually possible. We also start working out how to turn the original pillarless E24 doors into a strong structural assembly capable of supporting the massive forces created by a roof-mounted gullwing hinge.
And this is only the beginning.
The roll cage still needs to go into the car before we can cut into the A-pillars and finish the structural work. Once that's done, we'll finally be able to start building the mechanism in steel and turn this crazy idea into reality.
