Flow In 7 Steps
Description: Step six is the one people underestimate. Motivation rarely shows up before the work. It shows up about fifteen minutes in.
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, the University of Chicago psychologist who named flow, found something strange when he paged people at random through their days. They hit flow about three times as often at work as they did in their free time, and still said they would rather be somewhere else. Leisure feels like the good part. The absorbed part mostly happens on the job.
So the conditions matter more than the mood. One clear goal, hard enough to stretch you, and nothing allowed to interrupt it.
Csikszentmihalyi, M., & LeFevre, J. (1989). Optimal experience in work and leisure. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 56(5), 815–822.
