His combat effectiveness noticeably declined after regaining his senses; his mechanical arm was stopped by Spider-Man and subsequently destroyed by Iron Man. Originally Captain America's close friend, he was captured by HYDRA after falling from a cliff during World War II; subjected to serum injections and repeated memory wipes, he was reduced to a killing machine. He was manipulated by Zemo to spark the Avengers' civil war and, while under mind control, killed Tony's parents.
