Why was Beerus Once a Lizard?! #dragonballsuper
Description: Hosted by @TheSSUltimateGoku
Instead of the skinny purple cat we know today, Beerus was originally designed as a lizard-like creature who could basically infect people with evil.
And here’s the craziest part: the original story would have revealed that Beerus was responsible for making the Saiyan race so ruthless in the first place.
That’s actually where his name came from. “Beerus,” or “Birusu” in Japanese, was originally a play on the word “virus,” because his evil essentially spread like one.
But when Akira Toriyama got involved, he completely changed the character. Toriyama apparently thought Beerus’ name was supposed to be a joke about BEER, not a virus, so he continued the alcohol theme by naming his attendant Whis after whiskey. That accidental misunderstanding eventually gave us names like Champa, from champagne.
And Toriyama also threw out the lizard design. Instead, Beerus was inspired by Toriyama’s own elderly Cornish Rex cat, which had miraculously recovered from a serious illness. Toriyama even incorporated Egyptian-inspired clothing into his design.
So instead of an evil lizard who basically CREATED the evil Saiyans, Dragon Ball ended up with the food-loving purple cat God of Destruction we know today. Close description
