PPS closure plans raise questions about bond-funded school upgrades
Description: Parents in Southeast Portland are raising concerns about how the school district is spending millions of dollars upgrading schools now listed for possible closure.
KATU has been following the district’s plans to close up to 14 schools and reviewed both proposed closure lists. At least some schools on those lists have received, or are scheduled to receive, millions of dollars in bond-funded work, including new roofs, seismic safety improvements, mechanical upgrades, asbestos removal and accessibility projects.
Nell Manning, a parent to a third grader at Woodmere Elementary in Southeast Portland, is concerned about how the district is spending money -- given that her child's school is on both of the district's school closure proposals but is still undergoing a construction project worth $3.6 million, according to a sign at the school.
Though a district spokesperson says the budget for the project is $6 million.
