LeetCode 1200 | Minimum Absolute Difference | Java | Easy | Sorting & Adjacent Scan | CodeByTushu
Description: π Welcome Back to CodeByTushu!
In todayβs video, we solve LeetCode 1200 - Minimum Absolute Difference using Sorting and Adjacent Scanning in Java.
We are given an array of distinct integers and asked to find all pairs of elements that yield the minimum absolute difference among any two elements in the array. The pairs must be returned in ascending order. A naive pairwise comparison would require O(n^2) operations, which is too slow for 100,000 elements. By observing the properties of sorted numbers, any minimum absolute difference between distinct numbers must occur between two adjacent elements in the sorted array.
We sort the array in ascending order and perform linear scans across adjacent neighbors. First, we identify the global minimum difference by comparing the current element with the previous element and calculating their difference. Then, we collect all adjacent pairs whose difference equals this minimum value. Since the underlying array is already sorted, the resulting pairs are naturally generated in ascending order, with each pair arranged from smaller to larger. The solution achieves optimal O(n log n) time complexity and O(1) auxiliary space beyond the sorting stack.
π₯ Problem Highlights
β Mathematical observation: minimum difference between distinct integers always occurs between adjacent elements in sorted order
β In-place sorting provides efficient ordering of array elements
β Avoids O(n^2) all-pairs comparison, reducing time complexity to O(n log n)
β Natural ascending ordering guarantee for both pair members and overall list order
β No extra memory overhead beyond output collection and recursion stack frames
β Optimal O(n log n) overall time complexity and O(1) auxiliary space complexity

π¬ Question of the Day
Why does the minimum absolute difference in an array of distinct integers always occur between adjacent elements after sorting?
1οΈβ£ For any three sorted numbers x, y, and z, where x is smaller than y and y is smaller than z, both differences between y and x and between z and y are strictly smaller than the difference between z and x
2οΈβ£ Sorting elements removes all duplicate differences from the array
3οΈβ£ Non-adjacent elements have negative differences
4οΈβ£ The Java Arrays.sort() method automatically groups minimum pairs together
