Government figures released in August 2026 show that 24,173 track kilometres, representing 22.5% of the reported network, fall in the 130 kmph-and-above category. Another 62,482 track kilometres, or 58.1%, are listed in the 110–130 kmph band, while 20,897 track kilometres, or 19.4%, fall below 110 kmph. These are track kilometres, which count parallel tracks separately, rather than the distance between destinations.
Vande Bharat trains have a design speed of 180 kmph and a maximum operating speed of 160 kmph, subject to route readiness. However, the “130 kmph and above” category does not mean every track within it is approved for 160 kmph operations. The published breakdown does not separately identify the entire 160 kmph-ready network.
The figures help explain why introducing faster trains alone cannot deliver their maximum speed throughout a journey. Railway authorities identify track geometry, station stops and maintenance work among the factors affecting average speeds. Calling the problem simply “old tracks” would overlook improvements already made. The share supporting 130 kmph or more has risen from 6.3% in 2014 to 22.5% in 2026, alongside upgrades to rails, sleepers and track maintenance.
For passengers, further journey-time reductions depend on continued route improvements as well as modern trains. Vande Bharat’s faster acceleration can still provide benefits where reaching its maximum operating speed is not permitted.
