Magic Mountain closes X2 coaster permanently after history of injuries

Description: Six Flags Magic Mountain has permanently closed its X2 roller coaster after more than two decades of operation and multiple reports of serious injuries.

The ride was temporarily shut down in July after two riders suffered brain hemorrhages requiring surgery, prompting an ongoing inspection by California’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

X2, originally opened as X in 2002 and redesigned with lighter trains in 2008, features seats that rotate 360 degrees while riders travel along the track, including sections where they plunge headfirst toward the ground.

The ride has been associated with several lawsuits and deaths, including the 2022 death of 22-year-old Christopher Hawley and the 2010 death of Hilda Farias, who suffered a brain bleed after riding X2, Los Angeles Times has reported.

Six Flags said the ride consistently passed safety tests but decided to permanently close it because of concerns about guest confidence and safety, while the park plans to open a new coaster called Thrill Glider next year.
