Description: #TheBatmanPartII #MattReeves #RobertPattinson
The Batman Part II has shut down production. Director Matt Reeves has stepped away from the London set to deal with a personal family matter and Warner Bros and DC Studios have officially paused filming on the most anticipated DC sequel in years.
DC Studios released a statement confirming that production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter. The studio added that Reeves has their full support and they look forward to continuing production when he is ready to return. No timeline has been given for how long the pause will last and Warner Bros has declined to comment on whether this will affect the current February 18 2028 release date.
This latest pause comes after years of delays that have plagued the sequel since it was first announced at CinemaCon in April 2022. The Batman Part II was originally scheduled for October 3 2025 before being pushed back a full year to October 2 2026 due to the 2023 writers strikes impacting Matt Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin's script. It was then delayed again to October 1 2027 as the script continued through development. Another delay pushed the release to February 18 2028. Filming finally began in London in June 2026 after one of the longest development periods for a major superhero sequel in recent memory. Set photos and videos showed the Batmobile driving through snowy streets and a motorcycle stunt nearly colliding with extras just days before the shutdown.
The cast for The Batman Part II is stacked. Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne and Batman. Sebastian Stan joins in a role widely rumored to be Harvey Dent the district attorney who eventually becomes Two-Face. Scarlett Johansson is cast in an undisclosed role rumored to be Gilda Dent, Harvey's wife. Charles Dance from Game of Thrones reportedly plays Christopher Dent, Harvey's father. Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch join in undisclosed roles. Returning from the first film are Colin Farrell as Oswald Oz Cobblepot also known as The Penguin fresh off his acclaimed HBO spin-off series. Jeffrey Wright returns as Lieutenant James Gordon. Andy Serkis returns as Alfred Pennyworth. Jayme Lawson returns as Mayor Bella Real and Gil Perez-Abraham returns as Officer Martinez.
Barry Keoghan who appeared briefly as the Joker in a deleted scene from the first film is rumored to have a larger role in the sequel but nothing has been officially confirmed. The story is rumored to follow Batman, Gordon, and Harvey Dent forming an unstable alliance to hunt a serial killer and take down Gotham's entrenched mob presence. Matt Reeves directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin. Michael Giacchino is expected to return to compose the score. James Gunn and Peter Safran serve as producers through DC Studios. The Batman Part II exists within DC Elseworlds separate from the main DCU being built by Gunn and Safran. In this video we break down everything about the production pause including the full timeline of delays, the complete cast list, what the story could look like, and what this means for the February 2028 release date.
