Description: Indian mobile users will soon see registered caller names alongside incoming phone numbers under a mandatory telecom rollout scheduled for November 1, 2026. The Department of Telecommunications has directed operators, including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and BSNL, to introduce Calling Name Presentation, or CNAP, across their service areas.

The October 13 directive initially covers 4G and newer wireless networks, including 5G. Implementation on 2G, 3G and landline networks will be considered separately.
Jio, Airtel and Other Operators Directed to Introduce Caller Name Display From November 1
For an unsaved domestic number, the displayed name will come from subscriber records maintained by the caller’s telecom operator. If the recipient has already saved that number, the name in their contacts will take priority.
Operators must enable the service by default, without requiring subscribers to submit a separate activation request. The system provides network-based identification, reducing the need for a third-party application simply to identify an unknown caller.
There are exceptions. Unsaved international numbers will display “International Call”, while callers covered by the permitted Calling Line Identification Restriction facility will not have their names presented. Businesses may request verified trade or trademark names under the prescribed conditions. The Times of India
The measure aims to improve transparency and help users assess unfamiliar calls amid concerns over impersonation, spam and fraud. However, a displayed subscriber name does not establish that a caller’s claims are genuine or that a request for payment is safe.
For consumers, the immediate change is clearer identification on supported networks and handsets. Operators have also been directed to maintain grievance-handling mechanisms for problems associated with the service.
