LeetCode 3507 | Minimum Pair Removal to Sort Array I | Java | Simulation & Array | CodeByTushu
Description: π Welcome Back to CodeByTushu!
In todayβs video, we solve LeetCode 3507 β Minimum Pair Removal to Sort Array I using Simulation and Array in Java.
We are given an array of integers and can repeatedly perform a deterministic operation: find the adjacent pair with the minimum sum (choosing the leftmost one upon tie) and replace them with their sum. The objective is to determine the minimum number of operations required to make the entire array non-decreasing.
Because each operation rule is strictly deterministic with no branching choices, we can simulate the reduction process step by step. In each iteration, we verify whether the array is already non-decreasing. If it is not, we identify the adjacent pair with the minimal sum, collapse them into a single element, and increment our operation counter. Since each collapse strictly decreases the array length by 1 and any single-element array is sorted, the simulation is guaranteed to terminate within n - 1 steps.
π₯ Problem Highlights
β Strictly deterministic operation leaves no branching choices
β Direct step-by-step array reduction simulation
β In-place adjacent pair collapse preserving remaining order
β Guaranteed termination in at most n - 1 operations
β Handles negative and positive values seamlessly
β Optimal O(n^2) time and O(n) auxiliary space complexity

π¬ Question of the Day
Why is the simulation guaranteed to terminate in at most n - 1 steps?
1οΈβ£ The sum of elements increases in every step
2οΈβ£ Each operation merges two adjacent elements, reducing array size by 1 until size 1 is reached
3οΈβ£ Negative numbers are eliminated automatically
4οΈβ£ The array is always sorted after 2 steps
