"The classroom has no walls: What Travel teaches us about Learning?" | Tabish Bilal | TEDxJIM Indore
Description: What if the strongest classroom isn't some kind of classroom? In ‘What Travel Teaches Us About Learning', Tabish Bilal questions the notion of education as he draws inspiration from strange places, experiences and discomfort. Proceeding from an array of cultural and community experiences, the lecture discusses how leaving one's comfort zone can challenge and challenge ones thinking, adapting and opinions. Tabish introduces the concept of an “Encounter + Curriculum” meeting (where lived experience is encountered and where structured reflection gives rise to meaningful learning). The message of this talk is to overcome comfort – to leave one's comfort zone and sit in uncertainty, to move into new territory and viewpoints, to become comfortable with feeling uncomfortable and to gain confidence in the unknown. The most that education can offer is not just more information but the lessening of fear of what has yet to be known. Tabish Bilal is the Co-founder of TYCIA Foundation, a 15-year-old Indian nonprofit working across four states in education, criminal justice reform, livelihoods, climate, and medical relief. He is also Co-Founder of Fundable USA and Vice President at 360Plus Foundation, a California-based nonprofit, where he works at the intersection of American and Indian philanthropy
Tabish co-designed and leads the Leadership Collective, an annual experiential learning program that brings together student leaders from over a dozen countries for an immersive journey across Indian cities, using travel as a tool for leadership development and cross-cultural learning. Its most recent edition took fifty students from fourteen countries through Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Bengaluru, exploring climate and urban futures
He is an American India Foundation Banyan Impact Fellow, an Acumen India and a TFIx Fellow. He remains especially drawn to what young leaders discover when they trade classrooms for cities. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Close description
