In an interview with the Guardian, Bagayoko, who is a left-wing mayor in the Parisian suburb of Saint-Denis, denounced police for their actions. “There may be a small minority of people who take advantage of demonstrations to cause trouble but it does not justify the disproportionate use of force by the authorities,” he said.
On Tuesday, police fired teargas at protesters as more than 250,000 pupils, teachers and parents demonstrated across France on the biggest day yet of a campaign for better high school conditions. At least 761 police officers and gendarmes have been injured, alongside 215 students and 89 members of teaching staff since the start of the movement, according to the education ministry.
